Vintage Microphones

!±8± Vintage Microphones

Vintage microphones are used for the purpose of intensifying weak sounds, by transforming sound waves into the electrical pulses. The year 1878 marked the beginning of carbon microphones. Vintage microphones are developed in various models and with varied features. Berliner and Edison filed for patents on carbon microphone. In the year 1910, E.Wente developed condenser microphones at Bell labs. By the mid 1920's, developments in condenser microphones made it possible to record films. The omni directional dynamic microphone was developed by Wente and Thuras in the late 1920's. Omni directional dynamic mikes were invented in the late 1930's. From then on, there have been several advancements in microphones. The equipments that were heavy and bulky have become lightweight and handy now.

Vintage microphones are one of the collections of microphones that were used in the olden days. Vintage microphones may be listed in chronological order based on the models: carbon microphones which came into being in 1878; the 394 condenser microphone introduced by Western Electric; the 4AA condenser mic introduced by Radio Corporation of America (RCA); the 618A introduced by Western Electric; the 630A developed again by Western Electric; the cardiod microphones developed by Siemens; the tubular microphone designed by Bell labs; the 44A, B, and BX velocity ribbon microphones developed by Harry F. Olson at RCA; the 77A , B, C, D, and DX unidirectional ribbon series; the 639A and 639B introduced by Western Electric. These systems are the various vintage microphones.

These vintage microphones are in high demand and therefore are very costly. People who could not afford it went in for the microphones bearing assorted brand names that surfaced in the American market. They were RCA type 77 models but with different crystal elements. Prices for these microphones are usually ranged around to .

Microphone parts and accessories are also available for collection purposes. Some companies specialize in reproduction of these rare accessories. Like other areas there are spurious manufactures in the field of vintage microphones too. One must be choosy while buying vintage microphones from markets.

Beyerdynamic MC 950 Condenser Studio Microphone Review

!±8± Beyerdynamic MC 950 Condenser Studio Microphone Review

The Beyerdynamic MC 950 Condenser Studio Microphone is a small condenser microphone from Bererdynamic. Similar to the other microphones from the MC 900 product line like the 910 and 930, the MC 950 is intended where sounds from pianos, guitars, and choirs are required. The 900 series microphones come with a 15 decibel pad with a 6 decibel octave LF roll-off at 250 megahertz. These features cannot be swapped or transferred.

The design of the 900 series so is that the cap can be adjusted to the end of the body, reducing reflections that occur in other microphones; a windscreen option is available for outdoor use and convenience.

The features of the microphones outdoors are so well-tuned and designed that it reduces the amount of noise distortion sources heard from outside, especially during loud conversations or medium-level construction noises. In particular, the MC 950's rear rejection is pretty good, although some content can be heard from a low-end instrument with tremendous bass. The pad provided in the package allows high sound pressure level sources such as a guitar cabinet or Leslie.

Each microphone comes with:
a clip,
a carriage bag,
a frequency chart with 2dB to 2dB dip in the 4kHz to 8kHz range flattering without unnatural sound

In hindsight, the best results for the condenser microphone were from 6 to 12 inches away. In effect, the MC 950 is better as a spot microphone or during a live setting with wider acoustic settings and greater space. The microphone is not the best for close vocal range as the quality appears more nasally and thinner than the former. Also, the latter resulted in a quicker fall of both the treble and bass ends of the microphone's features. However, one the optimal range of 6 to 12 inches has been reached, the sound quality is expansive and grand. The vocal quality sounds natural and dynamic, and the sound of acoustic instruments is maximized to their full musical potential.

However, the dip and boost characteristics of the MC 950 are not for everyone as it can become too complex for the beginner and novice users. If you have the time, patience, and the sound acumen for reaching the optimum microphone range, then the Beyerdynamic MC 950 may be the right microphone for you.

He Walked by Night: Richard Basehart, Scott Brady, Roy Roberts, Whit Bissell (1948 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com He Walked by Night (1948) is a black-and-white police procedural film noir, crediting Alfred L. Werker as director. The film, shot in semidocumentary tone, was allegedly based on the real-life actions of Erwin "Machine-Gun" Walker. During production, one of the actors, Jack Webb, struck up a friendship with the police technical advisor, Detective Sergeant Marty Wynn, and was inspired by a conversation with Wynn to create the radio and later television program Dragnet. He Walked by Night was released by Eagle-Lion Films and is notable for the camera work by renowned noir cinematographer John Alton. Today the film is in public domain. On a Los Angeles street, Officer Hollis, a patrolman on his way home from work, stops a man he suspects of being a burglar and is shot and mortally wounded. The minor clues lead nowhere. Two police detectives, Sergeants Marty Brennan (Brady) and Chuck Jones (Cardwell), are assigned to catch the killer, Roy Morgan (Basehart), a brilliant mystery man with no known criminal past, who is hiding in a Hollywood bungalow and listening to police calls on his custom radio in an attempt to avoid capture. His only relationship is with his little dog. Roy consigns burgled electronic equipment to Paul Reeves (Whit Bissell), and on his fifth sale is nearly caught when he shows up to collect on his property. Reeves tells police that the suspect is a mystery man named Roy Martin. The case crosses the paths of ...

My friend Tobias Enevoldsen on fiddle and me on banjo banjo and song. I had forgotten to connect the external microphone so the sound is recorded with the build-in microphone in the camera and it's not too good, and maybe I should have stuffed the banjo with a pair of socks so it didn't drown the song.

The Blue Microphones Blueberry consists of a Class A discrete microphone amplifier perfectly matched to BLUE's single pattern, cardioid, hand built large diaphragm capsule. First and foremost, the Blueberry has been designed to provide the commanding, intimate presence associated with the world's best (and most expensive) vintage vocal microphones. With its shimmering, detailed highs, smooth midrange, and minimized proximity effect (a bass boost inherent in all unidirectional mics), the Blueberry excels at delivering a vocal right to the front of the mix where it belongs. When processed with limiting and/or compression, as is standard practice for most pop vocals, tracks recorded with the Blueberry will be free of pumping, low frequency thumps. Acoustic guitar, hand percussion, drums, and other critical high end sources also shine in front of the Blueberry, gaining an extra measure of presence that enables the most delicate sounds to cut through a mix, even at very low levels. Designed to fill the needs of the home musician and the professional alike, the Blueberry includes the Series Two Shockmount and comes handsomely packaged in its own cherrywood box. Whatever your music, add a Blueberry to the mix and let your ears feast on the sound. How To Choose the Right Studio Microphone For Your Recordings

!±8± How To Choose the Right Studio Microphone For Your Recordings

Choosing a microphone shouldn't be too hard, assuming that you know the differences between microphones and what you will be using yours for. Granted, recording your vocals should not warrant the same type of studio microphone as recording instruments. It's important to know what you will be using it for, and then going on from there.

A general rule is that dynamic microphones such as the Shure SM58S are exceptional for instruments and life performances. As a matter of fact, if you pay close attention to what most live performers use, you can almost bet, that it will be a Shure SM58S. On the other hand, condenser studio microphones are used for vocals or other soft recordings where details are extremely important. As you can see, having both type of microphones would be beneficial, but that boils down to your budget.

The condenser has a flatter frequency then the dynamic, which for recording vocals is a must. What ends up happening when you record on a condenser studio microphone such as the AKG PERCEPTION 220, you get a more clearer and accurate recording. The dynamic on the other hand, tunes out some of the details because once again, they are meant to be used for instrument recording and live performances.

The condenser studio microphone also requires a preamp or a mixer, which will provide phantom power of around 48 volts. Because the condenser requires the electric juice to run, the preamp serves as a booster. The dynamic doesn't require any phantom power, seeing as how it's a more rugged and less sensitive counterpart to its brother microphone, the condenser.

There is also another important thing to consider when choosing the perfect studio microphone for you - the pick up pattern. Essentially there are three different kind of "pick up patterns;" the omni directional microphones, the bidirectional microphones, and the unidirectional microphones.

The omni directional microphones pick up sounds evenly, so if you have a home recording studio, STAY away from such microphones. Why? It will pick up your TV, your neighbours TV, and your dog barking at the cat.

Bidirectional microphones on the other hand pick up sounds from only two directions, the front and the back. They are often used in radio interviews, which allow people to share a microphone.
Unidirectional microphones are the optimal for home recording studios. These microphones pick up sounds from one direction, and allow you to isolate sounds that you don't want to record quite easily. They also include the cardioid microphone such as the Blue Microphones Baby Bottle Cardioid Condenser Mic.

In conclusion, it all depends on what you will be using your microphone for. If you plan on recording instruments or performing live, then a microphone such as the Shure SM58S Vocal Microphone is your best bet. On the other hand, if you are going to be recording vocals and care about the detail and clarity of them, then you have to purchase a condenser studio microphone.
